Education makes the weak strong; and the strong wise. That’s been my mantra since I first ran for the legislature in 1999.
I’ve seen many changes since then – some good, some bad.
In 2015, twelve years of hard work paid off with two major milestones:
- Every Oregon child will finally have the opportunity to jump start their academic success with fully-funded full day kindergarten. Kids across the state will receive a full day of age-appropriate reading, mathematics, and play. The Legislature came together to provide “Full Day K” by rearranging priorities rather than raising taxes.
- Of course, in the modern economy, post-secondary education is just as important as k-12. That’s why I’m proud to announce the innovative Oregon Promise. The Oregon Promise is simple. It says that if you keep your grades up and graduate from high school, we promise to provide you with two years of community college without borrowing a dime. This landmark legislation works by leveraging federal funding with minimal cost to the state.
